A religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence. A critique of Geertz's model by Talal Asad categorized religion as "an anthropological category.". Many religions have narratives, symbols, and sacred histories that are intended to explain the meaning of life and/or to explain the origin of life or the Universe. From their beliefs about the cosmos and human nature, people derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle. According to some estimates, there are roughly 4,200 religions in the world.

Creating a religion

Personal relationships with the divine are the aim of every religion. However, there are different beliefs and practices. Many religions are serious and tend to give a peaceful message.

Deity

A deity is a proper term for a god or goddess. Religions either have a pantheon of gods, practice monotheism, or practice dualism. Some religions even pertain to having no deity. Those religions are called nontheistic religions. A popular nontheistic religion is Buddhism. Many deities have an origin and are given several powers. Some deities are even the power of being a supreme being over all other gods and goddesses, or just might be the one god or goddess.

Religious text

Most religions have a single religious text. Religious texts are the texts which various religious traditions consider to be sacred, or central to their religious tradition. Many religions and spiritual movements believe that their sacred texts are divinely or supernaturally revealed or inspired. While some religions (Sects and denominations) are part of larger religions that have a scripture, they tend to use that or stick with their own scripture.

Afterlife

Religions have several views on the afterlife such as a place of all good souls, or a place of separation and darkness. A prominent example would be Christianity's heaven and hell. There could also be more than two places of the afterlife. Where followers enter into a realm where their chosen deity resides.

Prophets/Teachers

Prophets and teachers are divinely inspired people who are serious in their actions. Unlike those who think of them as crazy people, true prophets are peaceful and give messages of peace. They tend to wear fancy clothing like robes, gems, suits, etc.

Sacred sites/places of worship

Many faiths have sacred sites and places of worship. These are places where followers of that faith all come together and worship. They can be known for having altars, pews, tables, etc along with buildings which look sacred.

Symbolism

Symbolism is an important factor in religion. Many religions have their own religious symbol(s). They seem to appear on things such as religious texts, buildings, clothing, etc.
